The 1989 Summer Universiade, also known as the XV Summer Universiade, took place in Duisburg, West Germany.

Iran and Iraq boycotted the event in response to the Iran–Iraq War in 1980. Iran also chose to boycott the 1989 Winter Universiade in Sofia for the same reason.
