These titles were created in 1808, with the exception of Albufera which was created in 1813, by Napoleon I of France. There exist three different types of dukes of the Empire:
- Extra-ordinary ducal titles: people who were titular vassals of the Empire, of fiefs located outside of the Empire without any sovereignty rights
- Victorious ducal titles: people who received victory titles
- Ordinary ducal titles: ministers and maréchals who received honorary titles
