In J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium, an oliphaunt/mûmak (Plural: mûmakil) is a giant war elephant-like creature found on Middle-earth.
Etymology
[edit]Tolkien borrowed the term oliphaunt from Middle English, which in turn was a borrowing of Old French olifaunt. These terms referred to an ordinary elephant.
