The following is a list of highest-grossing films in Nepal, with gross revenue in Nepali Rupees. The prominent films released in Nepal before 2075 BS (2018 CE) had no official tracking of figures and thus contains generally accepted figures provided by producers, distributors and media reports.
Film Development Board (FDB) officially introduced the digital box office system in cinema halls across the Kathmandu Valley on July 18, 2018 and about a year later in remaining theaters outside the valley.[1] The box office figures of films released thereafter are based on the official reports provided by Central Cinema Management System (CCMS) under the board.
Despite a full-fledged box office system around the country in operation, there's still some incongruity in box office figures between distributors and FDB, due to manual ticketing adopted by some theaters despite e-ticketing system in place.[2]
Baahubali 2: The Conclusion holds the record of highest grossing film in Nepal with gross of रू 23 crore (230 million Nepalese rupees). Despite being a foreign film, it was an industry hit in 2017 and not even the domestic films in Nepal have been able to surpass this record yet. The highest-grossing Nepali film in Nepal is Kabadi 4: The Final Match with gross of रू 21.39 crore (213.9 million Nepalese rupees). The highest-grossing Hollywood film in Nepal is Avatar: The Way of Water with gross of रू 8.31 crore (83.1 million Nepalese rupees).
The Nepalese film industry is relatively young. Many early films were produced by the Royal Nepal Film Corporation (est. 1971) for the government, which was more concerned with the country's cultural heritage than commercial success. They gradually built a film industry infrastructure and enabled private productions. Kusume Rumal (1985) held the record of highest grossing film at the box-office until this was surpassed in 2001 by the musical Darpan Chhaya (these films would contend for the current box office record if figures were adjusted for inflation). New records were set in 2012 with the critically acclaimed crime thriller Loot which is considered Nepal's biggest blockbuster for exceeding रू 5 crore in Nepal . These records were broken by action-thriller Kohinoor[3] (2014), which is considered Nepal's first blockbuster for exceeding रू 10 crore in Nepal,[4] and domestically outperforming Indian films. These figures were surpassed by comedies Chhakka Panja (2016) with रु 15 crore gross and Chhakka Panja 3 (2018) with gross of रु 16 crore in the country. In 2022, Kabaddi 4: The Final Match amassed more than रु 17.6 crore in its second week[5] becoming highest grossing Nepali film of all time. Eventually, it grossed more than रु 20 crore in Nepal box office, being the first and only Nepali film to achieve this feat. The Chhakka Panja (franchise) is the highest grossing franchise in Nepal after collecting close to रु 63 crore in total as of 2023.
The list contains 10 biggest opening day records in Nepal. Films in Nepal usually open on Fridays but some films may release on a different day depending on the holidays.
