The 2024 ICC Women's T20 World Cup is scheduled to be the ninth edition of ICC Women's T20 World Cup tournament.[1] It was scheduled to be hosted in Bangladesh from 3 to 20 October 2024.[2] However, it has now been relocated to the United Arab Emirates for the same dates due to ongoing political unrest in Bangladesh, Bangladesh Cricket Board holds the hosting rights though.[3] Australia are the defending champions, having defeated South Africa in the final of the previous edition.

Background

[edit]

The ICC Women's T20 World Cup is a professional T20I tournament held between men's national cricket teams, organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC). The tournament, now being held every two years, was first played in 2009 in England. The last tournament held in 2023 in South Africa was contested by 10 teams. The defending champions were Australia, who defeated South Africa in the final of the previous edition.

Host selection

[edit]

In August 2024, the ICC announced that the 2024 Women's T20 World Cup would be played in the United Arab Emirates, with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) remaining the official hosts.[4]

Format

[edit]

The 10 qualifying teams were divided into 2 groups of 5 teams; all the 5 teams in a group played with all the others – for a total of ten matches in each group – and the top two teams in each group advance to the Knockout stage.

Schedule

[edit]

On 28 July 2024, ICC announced that the tournament will be played from 3 to 20 October 2024. It was scheduled to be hosted in Bangladesh. However, it has now been relocated to the United Arab Emirates for the same dates, as travel advisories were imposed by the governments of some participating teams due to the current political condition of Bangladesh, as announced by ICC on August 2024.

On 16 August 2024, ICC announced that warm-up fixtures will be held from 27 September to 1 October. However, on 26 August 2024, after the announcement of the revised schedule, the warm-up fixtures were scheduled to be held from 28 September to 1 October.

Teams and qualification

[edit]

In April 2022, the ICC confirmed the qualification process for the tournament.[1] Bangladesh qualified for the tournament automatically as the hosts. Scotland qualified for the Women's T20 World Cup for the first time after defeating Ireland in the first semi-final of the qualifier.[5][6] Sri Lanka became the second qualifier and reached their ninth T20 World Cup after defeating United Arab Emirates in the second semi-final.[7] Overall, nine out of ten teams from 2023 reached the T20 World Cup, with the only difference being Scotland replacing Ireland.[8]

Squads

[edit]

Each team selected a squad of 15 players before the tournament, and was able to replace any injured players. Pakistan were the first to name their squad on 25 August 2024.[9]Australia followed a day after.[10] On 27th August, India and England announced their squads as well.[11][12] West Indies announced their squad on 29 August 2024.[13]

Venues

[edit]

In July 2022, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed that two venues, Dhaka and Sylhet would host the matches.[14] Dhaka was to host the final, although Sylhet was originally meant to host the finals. Later, in August 2024, ICC announced that the United Arab Emirates will host the Women's T20 World Cup instead of Bangladesh although the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) will continue to host the event. The matches are scheduled to be played at Dubai and Sharjah.[15]
