David Edmund Burton-Sampson[1] is a British Labour Party politician who has been the Member of Parliament for Southend West and Leigh since 2024.[2]
Career
[edit]Burton-Sampson's personal website says his upbringing "in Liverpool in the 1980s in a one parent family during the Thatcher years was tough".[3] In his maiden speech he said, "I have been told many times in my life that I would never achieve my dreams. I was the boy from a single-parent family, brought up in social housing. I was the boy who looked different from all the other kids in school and was often harshly reminded of that fact."[4]
He was deputy leader of the Labour Group on Basildon council.[5]
He unseated the Conservative MP Anna Firth, who had won the seat in a by-election after the murder of longtime MP Sir David Amess in October 2021.
Personal life
[edit]He is gay[5] and is married to his husband Mark.[6]
