Diet Mountain Dew is a no-calorie Mountain Dew that was first introduced in 1986.^[1] It was formerly known as "Sugar-Free Mountain Dew" until 1986, when it was given its current name. In 2006 Diet Mountain Dew was reformulated with a new "Tuned Up Taste", using a blend of sucralose, aspartame, and acesulfame potassium as sweeteners. The previous formulation was sweetened exclusively with aspartame.^[2]

Use of Diet Mountain Dew in the 2024 US presidential election

During a campaign rally for former U.S. President Donald Trump, Ohio Senator and Trump's running mate JD Vance joked that members of the Democratic Party would accuse him of being a racist for doing anything, including drinking Diet Mountain Dew. This remark prompted considerable political and media coverage, with former Republican political advisor Mark McKinnon calling Vance's comment "cringe."^[3] Kentucky governor Andy Beshear went further, remarking "Who drinks diet Mountain Dew?" in response to Vance's comments. Beshear would later apologize to Diet Mountain Dew drinkers by holding a bottle of the beverage during a press conference.^[4]
