Основные выборы состоялись 3 июня 2014 года. Согласно непартийному общему законодательству в Калифорнии, все кандидаты появляются в том же голосовании, независимо от партии. В первичных выборах избиратели могут проголосовать за любого кандидата, независимо от их партийной принадлежности. Два лучших финишера - независимо от стороны - продвигаются на всеобщие выборы в ноябре, даже если кандидату удается получить большинство голосов, поданных на первичных выборах. Харрис и республиканец Рональд Голд финишировали первым и вторым, соответственно, и оспаривали всеобщие выборы, которые Харрис выиграл с районом 14,98%.
