Banten Sundanese or Bantenese (Basa Sunda Banten or Basa Wewengkon Banten) is one of the Sundanese dialects spoken predominantly by the Bantenese — an indigenous ethnic group native to Banten — in the westernmost region of the island of Java, and in the western Bogor Regency (especially in Greater Jasinga,[2] which includes the following districts of Jasinga, Cigudeg, Tenjo, Nanggung, Parungpanjang, and Sukajaya; known as Jasinga Sundanese),[3] as well as the northwestern parts of Sukabumi Regency. A variety of Bantenese is spoken by the Gelaralam/Ciptagelar people in the Kasepuhan Gelaralam traditional community in the Cisolok district, Sukabumi Regency, and also the Kasepuhan Banten Kidul traditional community in the Lebak Regency.[4]
The regional government of Banten is currently making a significant approach to preserve this dialect through a news program entitled Beja ti Lembur, which was aired by the regional CTV Banten network in Bantenese.[5]
Geographic distribution
[edit]Unlike most other language varieties in Java, Bantenese does not employ sociolinguistic register,[6] unlike the Priangan dialect spoken in the Parahyangan region.
Bantenese is classified either as a dialect of Sundanese, or a distinct language closely related to Sundanese.[7] This language is predominantly spoken in the southern region of Banten, which are Lebak, Pandeglang, dan part of the central, west, and south Tangerang Regency. In the northern Serang Regency, this language is used daily by the people of Ciomas, Pabuaran, Padarincang, Cinangka, Baros, Petir, Cikeusal, Kopo, Cikande, Pamarayan and parts of Anyar district.[8] The Priangan Banten somehow also used by Bantenese transmigrants in Central Lampung Regency, Lampung.[9]
In Serang Regency, Bantenese is used daily by the people of Anyar, Mancak, Waringinkurung, Taktakan, Cipocok Jaya, Walantaka, as well as Kragilan district.[8] This language also used in some parts of Tangerang Regency,[10] especially in its southern, southwestern, midwest and northern parts,[11] as well as in the cities of Tangerang and the western part of South Tangerang, where the spoken area is along the Cisadane River.[12]
In Bogor Regency, which is located in West Java, this language is also used as the main language and is the majority in the westernmost part of the area, namely in Greater Jasinga. In addition, it is also spoken in district of Gunungsindur and the northern part of Rumpin which borders Tangerang Regency and South Tangerang City.[13]
